England fall to crushing series defeat in final ODI against Australia

The remains of the England and Australia teams failed to give value for money to a packed house for the seventh and final one-day international in Perth. England, particularly, put in a disappointing performance once again to go down 6-1 in the series.

England were without Eoin Morgan, who became their sixth player to fly home early. Morgan, who will arrive in London on Monday, will have his broken finger assessed and the results should be available by the time the rest of the players land at Heathrow at lunchtime on Tuesday. But he must be a serious doubt for the World Cup.

Australia were also well below full strength, resting Shane Watson, Michael Clarke and Brett Lee, although the fitness of Lee was the source of speculation after he bowled some light overs and left the net session early the previous day.

England, needing 280 to win, were all out for 222 and lost by 57 runs. They rejigged their batting order to cover for the missing Morgan, with Steven Davies returning to the side to open with Andrew Strauss and Matt Prior moving down the order.

But the new look produced the same old results. Both openers were out for ducks and England were five down for 64 in the 15th over. Some late hitting from Michael Yardy, who made an unbeaten 60, his highest ODI score, merely delayed the inevitable.

The Australia innings centred round a fifth-wicket stand of 95 in 14 overs between Adam Voges and David Hussey. Voges was a member of Australia's World Cup 30 but he failed to make the final cut – though he could yet be involved in the subcontinent because of injuries.

Here, playing on his home ground, he hit a career-best 80 not out and scored the runs from only 72 balls, with four fours. It was a busy, scampering innings as he and Hussey rotated the strike. Hussey again was important, hitting 60 in as many balls as he and Voges rescued the side from the perils of 103 for four in the 26th over.

Australia won the toss and chose to bat in the only day match of the series. The England bowlers had Australia on the back foot, and there were two wickets for Yardy, but once again the pressure was taken off and Australia were allowed to recover through Voges and Hussey. Then Mitchell Johnson weighed in with a quick 26.

England's wayward bowlers conceded 19 wides. Liam Plunkett, with six of them, was the main offender but otherwise he bowled well for his two for 49 return, especially after his epic journey from the Caribbean

Perhaps the most amazing part of the Puppy Bowl is it's viewership. Though it started 7 years ago as a space-filler, it's now viewed by 8.6 million people, something no one expected, reports CNN.

And the Puppy Bowl seems to be doing its part for more than just the network. Since 2004, 250 animals have been adopted through the game.

Obama Triggers Blackouts, (AP) – More than a dozen new industrial facilities to escape federal control of air pollution and the gases blamed for global warming after a top EPA official told a federal court that a long-delayed California power plant would not have to comply the rules. The reversal of the EPA is the Obama is under fire from Republicans for a host of new air pollution regulations that they say will kill jobs and projects. Republican leaders in the House and Senate unveiled legislation Wednesday aimed at preventing the agency from regulating greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act. It is the latest in a series of legislative efforts to undermine the EPA.

This provision means a change in the position EPA has taken in this matter,” EPA Assistant Administrator Gina McCarthy says in the document that was filed in U.S. District Court Monday. In a statement, the agency said it was not fair or desirable for devices with applications in the last phase of the evaluation to meet standards that have recently taken effect.

Approximately 10 to 20 facilities from the hundreds waiting for air pollution permits may be exempted from new rules, the EPA said. But it is unclear how much the threshold would be to control global warming gases trigger met.

In the past year, the agency has placed new limits on smog-forming nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide that causes acid rain and is linked to numerous respiratory diseases. And just one month ago, the first ever rules for the global warming emissions from large factories and power plants came into force.

“It creates a strong argument for treating us the same way you treat this guy,” said Michael Gerrard, an environmental law professor at Columbia University and former president of environmental department of the American Bar Association, the document revised. Gerrard said the move “is part of the efforts of the administration not to stop or be accused of stopping too many new projects.”

The EPA initially told the court that Avenal Power Center, LLC in central California would have to prove that its 600-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant would not violations of a new standard on the formation of smog-causing nitrogen oxide. The company sued the agency for taking too long to decide on the license, she served initially in February 2008.

EPA officials downplayed the decision and said it has no impact on their attitudes to global pollution control.

But Clean Air Watch President Frank O’Donnell called it “a disturbing reversal of policy.”

“It’s hard to avoid the conclusion that this change is at least partly aimed at blunting the political attacks,” said O’Donnell. “But it may only stimulate the appetite and business people who want Congress to block health and environmental standards.”

Consumer Group Demands Crackdown on Vitamin Water Advertising Claims

The National Consumer League, a Washington consumer-advocacy group, filed a formal complaint with the Federal Trade Commission requesting it investigate Coca-Cola's marketing claims for Vitamin Water. The league said the brand touts more benefits than it can deliver.

"Vitamin Water: Flu shots are so last year," reads one advertising poster for the product.

In its complaint, the league said Vitamin Water ads say the drink not only promotes a healthy immune system but can also replace the flu shot.

"It's not only deceptive but potentially dangerous to consumers," said Courtney Brein, a food safety and nutrition fellow at the National Consumers League. "There's a difference between stating that certain elements of a product are good for you and implying that the product will actually prevent the consumer from catching the flu or coming down with the common cold."

With more than $700 million in sales last year, Vitamin Water has become one of the most popular sports drinks. Coca-Cola said in a statement that the content of its beverages is clearly marked on the label.

"Vitamin Water has always had a fun, humorous and engaging personality," the company said in a statement. "And our ads reflect that."

But some legal experts said it's easy to blur the line between clever advertising and overpromising.

"If you talk about what's in your product, then it has to be there," said Howard Beales, an associate professor of strategic management and public policy at the George Washington University School of Business. "If you talk about the effects of that substance, then you have to have evidence that documents the substance really does have those effects."

Research suggests the evidence as to whether the vitamins in Vitamin Water -- mainly vitamin C and zinc -- work to suppress the flu is conflicting. But there is no evidence that the drink can prevent the flu or is as effective as a flu shot.

"The best way to get your vitamins is through a balanced diet or a supplement," said Dr. Richard Besser, ABC News' chief health and medical editor. "And the best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu shot."
